Carnelian Agate

Carnelian agate has been used by the ancients as far back as the 4th-5th millennium. Carnelian was used during Roman times to make engraved gems for signet or seal rings as for imprinting a seal with wax on correspondence or other important documents. Hot wax does not stick to carnelian. The word carnelian comes from the Latin word carnis meaning flesh. Carnelian is also mentioned in the Old Testament as being one of the gems on the “Breastplate of Aaron”.
Carnelian is also one of the birthstones for August and the sign of Leo.
