Carnelian is a type of agate or chalcedony which means it is microcrystaline quartz and forms in nodules and vugs ina host stone. Carnelian turns orange to red when heated. This can happen naturally or artificially in a lab.
Carnelian has been worn by people for millenia. The ancient Egyptians as well as the ancients of India, China, Mesopotamia and the Judeans. Carnelian was one of the stones on the “Breastplate of AAron” a story in the Old Testiment.
Carnelian is a second birthstone for the month of August and the sign of leo.
