Moonstone can come in a few different colors.
Sugilite was discovered in 1944 by a Japanese geologist Ken-ici Sugi on the island of Iwagi, Shikoku, Japan. It is also found in South Africa and has become what is considered a “new age ” gemstone.
The lovely rich color of sugilite varies from a red purple to bright royal purple and is sometimes found in a light lavender.
Sugilite is a complex semi precious mineral composed of a combination of Potassium, Sodium, Lithium, Iron, Maganese, Aluminum and Silica.
Another name for sugilite is “Royal Azel.”
|Moss Agate is a grayish to milky-white chalcedony containing dark-colored, dendritic branching forms that resemble ferns, moss, or other vegetation. These formations are caused by the inclusion of mainly manganese and iron oxides of inorganic origin. Most moss agates are found as fragments weathered from volcanic rocks and long used for ornamental purposes.|
Lapis lazuli has been mined in Afghanistan for over 6,000 years and it is also found in
Siberia and Chile. Lapis lazuli has been found at both Ancient Egyptian and Sumerian sites, and was traded widely in the then known world from Africa to China. Lapis lazuli is composed of primarily Lazurite but also contains calcite (white), sodalite (blue), and pyrite (metallic yellow).
Lapis is Latin for “stone” and lazuli is from the name of a place where lapis lazuli was mined. Lapis lazuli means “stone of Lāzhward “.
The ancients of Egypt and Sumeria used lapis lazuli for amulets and ornaments.
This is some of our local Salt Spring Island rhodonite and has been hand cut by the artist.
This semi precious British Columbia gemstone is a manganese silicate mineral and is also found in Africa, Australia and the USA.
Rhodonite often has black manganese inclusions in the form of crackled lines running through the stone that create striking and beautiful semi precious gemstones. Please see more rhodonite jewelry items for examples of this.
|Turquoise is an opaque, blue-to-green mineral and is a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminium. Good quality naturally hard turquoise is getting harder to find and much of the turquoise found today is soft and needs to be stabilized synthetically. This stone has been valued for thousands of years and was worn by the ancients including the Egyptians, Babylonians, Sumerians, Aztecs and Chinese.
The word turquoise, comes from a 16th century French word for “Turkish” from where it was first introduced to Europe.
All of these jewelry designs are singly made creations by Hawk and Owl.
